The cab exam in Zurich - what you should know
To pass the cab exam in Zurich, you must fulfill both theoretical and practical requirements. Before you can start the practical test, you must pass a specialist knowledge test, which includes additional theory.
To be able to register for the cab exam, you must meet certain requirements. These include
- You must be at least 19 years old.
- You need at least one year of uncomplained driving experience. This means that your driver’s license has not been revoked during this period.
- The driving experience must be based on the vehicle category for which you want to take the cab test.
- A current eye test not older than two years and issued by a Swiss optician must be presented.
- You must have a medical examination carried out by a medical examiner.
Once these requirements have been met, you can start the next step: the additional theory test.
The additional theory exam is a central component of the BPT 121 exam and focuses on specific regulations that are relevant to commercial passenger transport. An important part of the additional exam is the Working and Rest Period Ordinance (ARV2). This deals with legal provisions on maximum working and rest times, which are particularly relevant in the cab industry.
Important points for the additional theory test:
- The exam comprises 30 multiple-choice questions.
- To pass the test, a maximum of 3 mistakes may be made.
- The test is carried out on the computer.
- The exam content focuses on topics such as rest periods, working hours, safety aspects and other traffic-specific regulations.

Once you have passed the theory test, the practical test follows. Here, your driving skills are assessed at a higher level than is the case in a normal driving test. After all, as a cab driver you are responsible for the safe transportation of passengers.
In the practical exam, you have to demonstrate your skills in various situations, including:
- Driving in dense city traffic, including navigating safely through narrow streets.
- Dealing with traffic jams and busy roads.
- Safe transportation of passengers, including avoidance of abrupt braking or risky maneuvers.
- Knowledge of road traffic regulations, especially with regard to passenger transportation.
For the driving lessons and the practical test, you can either use your own vehicle, provided it meets the requirements, or a vehicle from our driving school.
